Pilates, (pronounced pi-LAH-teez) was created by
Joseph Pilates nearly a century ago. It was originally
used in European hospital-based programs as a form
of exercise/rehab. It was brought to the United
States and has developed over the years into a popular
exercise method that nearly anyone can perform with
relative ease. It is used by the young and the elderly,
professional athletes, dancers, injured and disabled
individuals, and by anyone else who desires better
physical health.
Working one on one with a certified trainer, small
repetitive movements are performed on various pieces
of specialized equipment and on floor mats. The
focus of Pilates is on the “core” muscles;
the abdominals and spinal muscles. It provides a
lengthening of the muscles as well as strengthening
and stabilizing them. Breathwork is also an important
part of a Pilates session.
Joseph Pilates said “In ten sessions you’ll
feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll
see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have
a new body”.
